Bogart Classics: 2 (Box Set)

A box set of classic Humphrey Bogart films. 'They Drive By Night' (1940) is an early Bogart vehicle in which two brothers, Paul (George Raft) and Joe Fabrini (Bogart), try to make a success of their independent trucking business. Women, however, get in the way of Joe's ambitions and when one of his admirers (Ida Lupino) murders her husband in order to free herself for Joe, he spurns her; which leads to a tense courtroom finale. In 'To Have and Have Not' (1944) Bogart plays Harry 'Steve' Morgan, an American running a fishing boat on Martinique, reluctant to get involved with the wartime battles between the Nazis and the Free French Movement. However, his loner stance is challenged when he meets, and falls in love with, the precocious Marie (a nineteen-year-old Lauren Bacall, making her screen debut). Bogart and Bacall fell in love on set, and were to team up together on screen a further three times. Movie legend has it that Ernest Hemingway bet Howard Hawks he couldn't make a movie out of his slim novel. Hawks went ahead and made the movie, but one which bears little relation to its progenitor. Finally, in 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre' (1948), stuck in Tampico, Mexico, Fred C. Dobbs (Bogart) is reduced to panhandling when he befriends another American, Curtin (Tim Holt). Together they find employment with contractor McCormick (Barton MacLane), who attempts to get away without paying them. After beating their wages out of him, the pair learn from old timer Howard (Walter Huston) that there is good money to be made from gold prospecting. They set out together to make their fortunes, but it is not long before greed rears its ugly head. John Huston won Oscars for his direction and screenplay, whilst his father Walter picked up a statuette for his supporting role. read more
